Queensland
Queensland is a northern Australian state often aptly referred to as the 'holiday state'. It comprises a huge area of 1 734 157 sq km, a population of just over 4 million and many beautiful holiday destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast and some 1 955 islands scattered along the coast. The coastline itself is almost 7 000 km in length.
The Great Dividing Range runs parallel with the coast and inland of the Cairns area spectacular scenery and agricultural land can be found around the Atherton Tableland. The richest farming lands are found in the south eastern part of the state, the Darling Downs.
There is an enormous Outback area stretching north and west with the Tropic of Capricorn found running through Rockhampton & Longreach. The stunning Cape York Peninsula at the very tip of Australia is considered one of Australia's last frontiers with a population of only about 10 000.
The famous Wet season in the tropical north is between Nov/Dec to April/May when it can get very hot. The remainder of the year tends to be cooler and drier. Brisbane is the state's capital is situated on the Brisbane River and is Australia's third largest city with a population of 1 820 400. Queenslands' main industries include manufacturing, property and business services & ownership, mining and retail. The floral emblem for Queensland is the Cooktown Orchid.
