On the other hand Dead as They Come is a very graphic novel but it is so strangely fascinating that it makes you want to continue reading He is a young writer in these stories, and they are missing some of the gravity that comes in his later works. Using the voice of one of the characters the author utters mcewqn phrase that could be the motif of the entire collection: The remaining stories are challenging and uncomfortable ls in a way that rewards the reader with a deeper understanding of McEwan’s writing and the characters themselves.

I become more intrigued with McEwan with each work I read and look forward to delving into his more celebrated works Saturday, Amsteram and Atonement.

Still, for all the youthful mistakes, the literary genius comes through without trouble. Again, McEwan shows that the short story can be lifted to high art in the hands of a gifted writer and, regardless your opinion of him, most will affirm McEwan is a gifted writer.

Every other story ends weakly: This enhre story is erotic, sexual stuffs and has what-will-happens-in-the-end kind of feeling.

Also, even though it is highly sensual, the stories and scenes were very well written. This is the weirdest story about an ape who can interact with his keeper Sally Klee, make coffees, clean plates and also with his other humanly qualities, he can read. There is no common motif or theme in this collection of seven stories.

I’m thinking of the father in the title story and his incestuous sabsnas for his young daughter and his regularly gross sexual feelings for her similarly young friend.

In the story two brothers work in a porn shop – one owns it, and the other tries to get customers to actually purchase some magazines and balances a relationship with two mistresses in the meantime – with a predictable ending.

Each of these stories seemed to be afterthoughts, or B-sides, if you will, but bad B-sides. Found myself deeply disturbed, and really, I am not easily so. Reflections of a Kept Ape was, as the title suggests – about a pet ape, however, the interesting detail is that the story is told from the ape’s perspective.

This was supposed to be a sexy read and that alone made me bypass many of the other no doubt excellent books I brought back from that excellent bookstore to read this one first. Its about a millionaire who buys a perfect mistress and soon he is enveloped in jealousy and despair.
